All iPhone 4S's up to the most current iOS version (6.1.4) can be unlocked to work on other GSM carriers worldwide. It's important to first understand your carriers unlock policy. Many carriers offer official unlocks either at a fee or once the subsidies have been paid and/or when your contract term has ended. There are other carriers who do not allow official unlocking and other methods must be used.

Third party methods are available for unlocking iPhone 4S's whose original carrier does not offer official factory unlocking methods. Please continue reading for more information....

MAJOR USA CARRIERS AND THEIR UNLOCKING POLICIES

- AT&T has a very lenient unlock policy. iPhone locked to the At&t network can be unlocked by contacting the carrier or visiting http://www.att.com/deviceunlock. This method can take up to a week to process and requires the contract term of the iPhone to be completed. You can also officially unlock an iPhone for a small fee by visiting http://www.iphonety.com and clicking the factory unlock tab.

Sprint offers only international unlocking for their customers.  The unlock will only work if you are abroad. They will not work for USA carriers. Customers must call Sprint  to have their iPhone's internationally unlocked.

Third party methods such as the GPP Sim interposer are available for unlocking to any GSM carrier worldwide including USA GSM networks. This method does work well but it is not official so updating your device should only be done if you are certain the new iOS is supported by the GPP sim Please continue reading below for instructions on unlocking your iPhone 4S using the GPP.

Verizon Verizon has an international unlock policy. You may factory unlock a Verizon iPhone 4S for networks outside of the United States. For GSM carriers in the U.S you will need to use third party methods like the GPP Sim interposer. Please scroll to the bottom of this post for a 4S unlocking Tutorial.
